Kenya deepen woes of Nigeria, Ghana beaten narrowly by South Africa

The Nigeria men who had lost 2 matches in a row to the two top ranked teams on the continent namely South Africa and Egypt, were determined to amass the maximum 3 points from the Kenyans who they saw as an equal match. The first two quarters saw no goal as both teams were careful to end this match with at least a point. The game continued till the last quarter when Kenya’s Wakhura scored in the 56th minute to put them in the lead. The game ended 2-1 in favour of Kenya. Ghana’s female Black Sticks beat Kenya as South Africa score 5 again

South Africa female team scored five goals again in their 2nd game to hold firm top spot at the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt. Defending Champions as well as Six-time winners South Africa continued their impeccable form in this year’s Cup of Nations by beating counterparts Nigeria 5-0. Chamberlain Dirkie scored her 3rd goal of the campaign in the 2nd minute to put South Africa in the lead. Skipper Damon’s Sulette increased the tally in the 6th minute before getting her 2nd and South Africa’s 3rd goal in the 30th minute from a penalty corner. The Nigerians held the champions in the 3rd quarter in order not to concede again but that resilience was short-lived. In the 4th and last quarter, Evans Cella added her name to the score sheet in the 49th minute before Sulette in the 60th minute completed her hat trick to round-up a convincing win for the Champions. After watching from the stands on match day one(1) as a result of Zambia’s withdrawal, the Black Sticks of Ghana returned to action against Kenya in the 2nd game of the day. The game was a cagey one from start as both teams wanted a win to secure a place in the final. It was Kenya who got off to a better start when Guchu Caroline scored in the 29th minute. The Ghanaians who knew a defeat will end their quest to make it to the final and win the ultimate, came in strong during the 3rd quarter. Their fine display paid off in the last quarter when Boakye Serwaa converted a penalty corner in the 51st minute to level for the West Africans. Time seemed to be running out with the game approaching a draw when Umaru Nafisatu stepped up to convert a penalty corner in the 54th minute to win all maximum points for Ghana. Ghana’s win over Kenya takes them to 2nd place behind South Africa. Host Egypt are in 3rd above Kenya while Nigeria stay bottom with no point.

Ghana and Egypt dominate in Match Day one of Africa Cup of Nations

The Africa Cup of nations commenced gracefully today in Ismalia. The men’s category which had three matches fixed earlier, saw just two(2) after Zambia officially wrote to withdraw from the event. The first match of the day was between the Black sticks of Ghana and their counterparts from Kenya. The pre-match predictions by fans across the continent purported that it was going to end in a close scoreline if not a draw. The last meeting of these teams was at the World Hockey League Round one series staged in Accra last year and Ghana won that game with a lone goal. The game started with a balanced press in the first 7 minutes of the game. Akuamoah Micheal put the Ghanaians in front in the 8th minute. Team Ghana outplayed the Kenya’s after going up and through to the 2nd quarter. Damalie Luke increased the tally in the 2nd quarter through a beautifully converted penalty corner. Team Kenya created chances but failed to score as they ended the quarter down by 2 goals. Elikem Akaba deepened their woes by scoring Ghana’s 3rd in the third quarter. The defence of Kenya couldn’t afford to let in a 4th goal as well as their attack also not able to convert the few chances they created hence keeping the scoreline 3-0 in favour of Ghana. In the 2nd game, Nigeria Men’s team suffered a 13-1 defeat at the hands of host nation Egypt.  The Egyptians who are a more experience and better side after their participation in the World Hockey League Semi final took their counterparts by ease scoring 13 goals across 4 quarters  with the Nigerians grabbing a consolation. The Egyptians who are poised in winning the ultimate left no stone unturned in their 1st game. Egypt with their massive day 1 win sit top of the men’s table. Ghana follow in 2nd while Kenya and Nigeria follow in 3rd and 4th place respectively. South Africa who had their game cancelled with Zambia lie bottom. By: DENNIS ABABIO JNR. Source: isports360.com

Hockey World League Semi-Final 2017 Women’s Award Winners: Johannesburg

BEST PLAYER Melissa Gonzalez (USA) Captain America Melissa Gonzalez led her team to glory in Johannesburg. Dominating games with her athleticism and passion, she inspired her team to their best finishes at a top level event in recent years. Like goalkeeper Jackie Briggs, Gonzalez proved crucial in both the semi-final and final shootout, her goals firing USA to victory.   BEST JUNIOR PLAYER Nike Lorenz (GER) Germany are a team on the up and much of their success has been influenced by an injection of gifted youth into this exciting team. One of the many exceptional talents at this event was German wonderkid Nike Lorenz. Solid in defence, the 20 year-old plays beyond her years, breaking up opposition attacks time and time again with typical German efficiency. Despite their loss in the final, with Nike Lorenz at the back the future of German women’s hockey looks to be in safe hands.   BEST GOALKEEPER Jackie Briggs (USA) Experienced ‘keeper Jackie Briggs was consistently brilliant for the United States. Her reliability and command in goal provided a solid base for the US women to build upon. Despite outstanding shot-stopping throughout the event, her standout moments came during the shootouts against England in the semi-final and Germany in the final. Her heroics, combined with some excellent finishing from her team-mates, won USA this event for the first time in their history.   TOP SCORER Jill Witmer (USA) Her four field goals and one penalty corner were key to USA’s road to victory. The 25-year-old striker will certainly be an asset for USA for many years to come. Her tireless running is key to opening up spaces and creating opportunities for her team, which, in addition to her clinical finishing in front of goal made her one of the most dangerous players at this event.
