South Africa produced a spirited defensive display but were narrowly defeated 1–0 by Ireland in the 13th-place playoff at the FIH Hockey Women’s World Cup.

Ireland entered the contest as the clear favourites, with South Africa having last beaten the European side in 2017, and they controlled much of the early possession.

After failing to convert an early penalty corner, Ireland found the breakthrough through a moment of quality in the 14th minute. Niamh Carey raced down the left before squaring the ball for her twin sister, Michelle, who was left with a simple finish at the far post.

The second quarter saw Ireland continue to dictate the pace and intensity of the game. They earned three penalty corners but were repeatedly denied by a resolute South African defensive wall.

To their credit, South Africa created their best opportunities on the counterattack during this period, with Ntsopa Mokoena testing the Irish defence with a shot from a tight angle.

The contest became increasingly cagey after half-time. South Africa defended deeper while Ireland were content to stand off, with the two sides effectively cancelling each other out through a goalless third quarter.

South Africa survived another two Irish penalty corners in the final quarter before withdrawing their goalkeeper to attack with 11 outfield players in search of a late equaliser.

Ireland, however, managed the closing stages with the composure and control developed through their FIH Pro League experience.

Still, South Africa refused to surrender and earned their first penalty corner of the match in the 60th minute. Hannah Pearce stepped forward for one final opportunity, but her effort was saved as Ireland held on for the narrow victory.

The result sees South Africa finish the tournament in 14th place, improving by one position on their 15th-place finish at the 2022 FIH Hockey Women’s World Cup.
