ACCC 2017: Telkom Kenya silences host nation

Defending champions Telkom Kenya had the better of GRA in their game on match day 4 with Ghana Police and Kada Queens getting vital wins over their opponents.

In the first game of the day, Ghana Police ladies thrashed Yobe Dessert Queens 4-0. Police who were so much in need of this win to catch up with GRA and Telkom started the game pressing hard and counter attacking. Amoako Cecilia opened the scoring as early as the 7th minute. Sarfoa Martha added her name to the score-sheet in the 29th minute to put Police 2-0 up before the end of the second quarter.

Cecilia grabbed her brace in the 50th minute before Nafisatu Umaru increased her tally to 7 goals in the tournament four minutes to time. The final whistle went and Ghana police grabbed their third win in 4 games.

GRA lost grip of the first position after losing to Telkom in the second game. It was a game witnessed by many especially the Ghana Police team as a win for GRA would have put them in comfortable position. However, the story was different at the final blast of the whistle. The first three quarters saw both teams waste chances.

Telkom who are yet to concede in this tournament displayed once again why they boast of the best defense. The teams were heading for a drawn game when Juma Netesa stepped up to convert a 57th minute penalty corner to send the entire stadium into total silence. The game ended with Telkom 1-0 winners. The win puts Telkom top of the table with 12 points with GRA second with 9 points.

The final game in the ladies category came up with Strathmore facing Kada queens. Strathmore who had lost all three games, came into this game solely for a win. Florence Oghenerobor made that impossible as she put the Queens in-front five minutes into the game. The tally was doubled three minutes later courtesy a solo effort from Noredia Nwagboe before Alfa john made it 3-0 in the 22nd minute. Okumu Gilly pulled one back for Strathmore but it was not enough as Adagboyn Atua added the fourth in the 30th minute.

The match ended with Kada Queens beating Strathmore 4-1. The win however, secures a bronze medal playoff match for Kada Queens while Strathmore, irrespective of the scoreline in their last game will settle for the 5th and 6th match.
