Sheila Brown (South Africa)

Sheila Brown started playing hockey while still at school and it soon became her passion.

After training as a Police officer, she was posted to Johannesburg and has lived there since 1974. Sheila served as a police officer for 43 years and retired with the rank of Colonel in 2015.

She started to play club hockey in 1975 and soon got involved in hockey umpiring and administration. At a young age, she got involved on the executive committees of the provincial body serving as President for the Southern Gauteng Hockey Association for more than 20 years.

For many years she served on the South African Hockey Association Executive committee in various portfolios. In 1995 she was approached to become involved as a technical official and she accepted this with open arms. Sheila’s first international break came in 1996 when she was appointed as a judge to Trinidad and Tobago in the Caribbean. From this point on she continued her growth serving as a judge or technical official at various events all over the World. She was then appointed as Tournament Director for the All Africa Games held in Abuja, Nigeria in 2003. Since then she was appointed TD to two Champions Trophies and also Tournament Director to two World Cups and in 2016 was appointed as Tournament Delegate to the Rio Olympic Games.

Sheila has been most fortunate to have attended four Olympic Games as a Judge to Athens (2004), and then as Assistant Tournament Director in Beijing (2008) and London (2012) and finally as Tournament Director for the Rio Olympic Games (2016). For her it has been a great privilege to have been afforded all these appointments.

Sheila was also then asked by the President of the AfHF if she would serve as a co-opted member on the African Hockey Federation’s EB which she saw as a huge honor and accepted graciously. After serving as a co-opted member she was approached to stand as Vice President of the AfHF which she agreed to and has been honored to have been elected in this position.

Sheila was also elected to serve on the FIH’s Health and Safety Committee and then was requested to be the Chair of the FIH Officials Committee which she accepted and currently holds that position.
